Brazil launched the program “Minha Casa, Minha Vida “(my house, my life) in 2009. Many municipalities have been fulfilling the promise and delivering the houses; some even with solar heating. The major problem that the new residents face is the lack of transportation to the new home. Since these new condos are built in remote districts, far from city centers, where no public transportation is available, there is an urgent need to adapt the public transportation system before the delivery of the houses. This often results in a battle between governments and municipalities, leaving residents with the only option of using more expensive private transportation. The article shows that a similar problem happens in Mexico, and many times they abandon the new homes for lack of transport infrastructure.
